Illinois law is that a child 14 and over can stay home alone. Illinois is one of the few states that have a specific age.
Many states say that a child 8 & up can stay home for a few hours by themselves - getting off the bus afterschool waiting for a parent to come home from work. But NOT Illinois. Gosh, think about the age you started babysitting....
